Applications that remove the manual work

In many companies, day-to-day work is held together by spreadsheets, email threads and data typed into several systems. It works – until volumes grow, someone is off sick or an error slips in. A simple, custom application can remove much of the manual work and let people spend their time on what actually creates value.

Which routines are worth automating?

The best candidates are tasks that recur often, follow the same steps every time and where mistakes have consequences. Typical examples are quote preparation, bookings, orders, reports, approvals and data moved by hand between systems.

Start with the process, not the technology

Before anything is built, we map how the work is done today: who does what, where the information lives and where things get stuck. Often the routine can be simplified before a line of code is written, and what remains becomes clear to build.

Start small and build on it

A first version can be a simple internal tool that solves one problem well. Once it's used day to day, the next step becomes clear. With a clickable prototype early – the same approach as in the article about the prototype that replaced the requirements spec – it's easy to test before investing more.

Connect the systems you already have

Many routines become manual because systems don't talk to each other. Integrations between, for example, the website, ERP, CRM and email let data move automatically, so the same information only needs to be entered once.

Where does AI help?

AI can sort incoming requests, summarise documents, suggest replies or extract data from documents. It works best as support within a clear process, where a person still reviews and makes the decisions.
